Coconut is one of the major plantation crops in Sri Lanka and said to be about 12% of all major agricultural produce in the Island. Total land area under cultivation is about 395,000 hectares in which about 2,500 to 3,000 million nuts are produced in a year. The coconut industry is an important source of foreign exchange .
